The morin khuur is the most iconic traditional Mongolian instrument. Its body is a wooden rectangular resonator, with the neck carved into a horse’s head, symbolizing the deep bond between Mongolians and horses. Two horsehair strings produce a rich, resonant sound. Its melodies are flowing and expressive, used in solo, ensemble, and vocal accompaniment, making it a cultural symbol of Mongolian music.
